Showcase of the Wonders of Uganda’s wildlife
The sheer richness and diversity of the wildlife and scenery of Uganda are too great to grasp in a short time. Located on the on the shores of Lake Victoria in minutes reach from the Entebbe Airport and only 30 miles from Kampala, the Wildlife Centre offers a unique first introduction to the wonders of our national parks – rainforests, wetlands, and savannahs – at the beginning of your safari . The country’s astonishing natural wealth and beauty is concentrated on a 33 hectare area in Entebbe.
The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is already something of a celebrity.
Originally founded in the 1950s to accommodate confiscated and injured wildlife, and to look after the orphan chimpanzees taken away from smugglers, it has grown considerably in recent years. Many say it is destined to become the most important showcase for wildlife on the Africa continent.
Created by the Government with the help of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York and managed by a Wildlife Trust, it never fails to delight. At UWEC you will be introduced to a broad variety of Ugandan wildlife in a natural surrounding. You will also come across free ranging velvet monkeys and a family troop of D’Braza monkeys in the jungle of the hillside forest. Over 120 bird species are to be checked, ranging from the African fish eagles over great-blue turacos, hammerkops, giant kingfischers to the smallest sun-birds.
UWEC is not a zoo in a conventional sense and not a safari park. Our aim is to model the main eco-system of this county in open range exhibits. Moat systems and natural barriers will replace fences and cages. Not only can you observe many of our most exciting indigenous species here; you will be given comprehensive briefings on them. If you are interested in botany, you will find a live collection of traditional medicinal plants.
Our staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have on any topics. They will also brief visitors on how best to appreciate and to care for Uganda’s unique and priceless wildlife heritage.
Make sure your tour operator include the Wildlife Centre on your itinerary. Visit also the new Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria, an extension of UWEC in partnership with international conservation agencies.
And if you want to help us in maintaining and further developing the Wildlife Centre, you can join our Animal-sponsorship scheme.
