The Murchison Falls National Park.
The Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda.
If you happen to be in Uganda for any reason, get time off to visit the Murchison Falls National Park, one of the country’s finest game parks. It is found in the Murchison Conservation Area, a place where you can also find the Karuma and Bugungu Wildlife Reserves which cover 280 and 720 square kilometers respectively. Quite a number of animal species like the 23 Albertine region endemics, the 76 species of mammals; like 4 out of the big 5 animals which include the elephants, lions, Buffaloes and leopards and over 450 species of birds inclusive of the uncommon Shoebill Stork have found home here. Some other species you will come across inside the park are the Waterbucks, the Ugandan Kobs, Giraffes, Bushbucks, Warthogs, Hyenas and the Jackson’s Hartebeests to mention but a few. In the waters of the Nile or even at its shores, crocodiles and hippos can be seen swarming the place while in the forests are several species of monkeys like the baboons that swing about.
Located in the North Western part of Uganda, the Murchison Falls National Park disperses inland from Lake Albert’s shores, goes around the Victoria Nile then heads straight up to Karuma Falls. When here at the Murchison Falls, the climax of your trip can be gotten only after seeing and trekking to the high point of the falls along the Nile River. It is at this point that the Nile waters vigorously find their way out of a very narrow gap that is only 8 meters.
The list of things you can do here is fairly long since the activities range and cover all categories from land, to the air and then on the water. Here is a list of a few things you can opt to do when at the Murchison Falls National Park;
- Game Drives.
Lasting about 3 to 4 hours these drives which take you to experience the beauty of the wild can be done as early as sunrise or even as late as sunset. This is one of the only parks where nocturnal game drives too can be done. On these drives, you get to watch preys and predators as they scavenge. Among these are the Lions, Rothschild Giraffes, Warthogs, Serval cats and elephants. However, you might find it hard to capture images of these animals especially when on the night drives.
- Boat Rides and Cruise.
These rides are out of this world especially when you start to notice the amazing things around you; like the hippos bouncy on the waters, the birds and many other animals. When on these rides, also get the opportunity to visit the falls where you can get off from the bottom then hike all the way to the top.
Another one of these boat rides is that to the Nile Delta where Lake Albert combines with the River Nile.
- The Hot Air Balloon Safari.
This is one of the recently introduced activities in the park. The Murchison Falls National Park is the second park after the Queen Elizabeth National Park that has the balloon experience in Uganda. You can get to see all the kinds of wildlife from over the tree tops and then later watch as the sun sets. You can also opt to have this balloon experience early in the morning and watch as the sun rises. Later enjoy the Bush breakfast that will never leave you the same.
